# Debt-to-income ratio (DTI)

> Everything you owe, including a new mortgage, as a multiple of your income before tax. Borrowing $600,000 on an income of $120,000 gives you a DTI of 5.

Since 1 July 2024, the Reserve Bank has set limits on how much banks can lend to people with high DTIs. Banks can only give 20% of new owner-occupier loans to people with a DTI over 6, and 20% of investor loans to people with a DTI over 7. The [borrowing calculator](https://buyingahouse.co.nz/tools/how-much-can-i-borrow) uses the owner-occupier limit.
