Test rate

The interest rate a bank uses to check you could keep up with repayments if rates went up. The test rate is higher than the rate you'd actually pay.

Each bank sets its own test rate. In November 2026, these ranged from 6.85% at ANZ and ASB to 7.10% at BNZ. The higher the test rate, the less you can borrow with the same income.
